The 2018 edition of Quest is on track for another year of eclectic international and local performers spanning every genre you can imagine - plus, a few you’ve never heard of. The tantalising line-up announcement comes after months of work poring over a record number of artist applications. As always, the festival will be representing the best emerging talent in Asia and beyond, with confirmed artists from the UK, Hong Kong, Japan and, of course, Vietnam, encompassing everything from jazz, grime, dub and house & techno.
Heading the mix is Birmingham-born singer/MC Eva Lazarus, who brings full power vocals to a dancehall, dub vibe. With iconic UK festivals like Glastonbury and Boomtown under her belt and a reputation for slick and sassy live shows, Quest should be treated to one hell of a performance. Also from the UK is DJ, multi-instrumentalist and prolific collaborator, Swindle, who is set to blow up The Quest Embassy with a set as varied as the festival itself. Known for jumping across genres and generations, the young producer has been heavily influenced by his globe-trotting touring. Also joining them from the UK is Bristol-based DJ, Chris Munky, who’ll be bringing along his own trove of rhythmic delights.
Closer to home, there’s the dreamy jazzdance electronica, Based On Kyoto, who hail from Japan. The Hong Kong-crafted, Gilles Peterson-approved ‘afro-bitten, electro-pyschedelia’ of Blood Wine Or Honey. The self-proclaimed borderless band and multi-media duo, Filastine & Nova, bringing a complexly creative visual-audio extravaganza to the screen and stage from the US and Indonesia. And, back for another year running, are the soulful troop of mavericks that make up Hanoi’s own Hanoing Jazz Band.
2018 will also see Quest handing over the reigns once again for Quest Takeovers. This gives the musical trail-blazers of Southeast Asia the chance to curate their own lineups for a riot of diversity and creative collaboration. Hanoi-born, Berlin-based Ele Records and Bangkok’s Slum Disco are both returning with new allies and the unofficial techno Sunrise Sunset stage will come alive with Die Empathy. Questers can also travel on a Cosmic Psytrance Adventure with Hanoi psytrance favourites Odyssey Tribe & Liquid Hive and compete in the Bass Olympics with BASStard.
This first announcement is a testament to Quest’s ongoing commitment to showcasing unique acts from across the World and fostering the best local talent. And, as always, it’s never just about the music. With 100s more acts, performances, workshops and more to be announced in the coming months, the excitement for this immersive and dynamic festival continues to grow.
