Drawing listeners into a lush, imaginative world with thought provoking lyrics is Zambia-born, Botswana-raised poet and rapper Sampa the Great (Sampa Tembo). Weaving lyrical mazes with her verses, her music spans from spoken-word to pure hip-hop rapping, with stops at psychedelic and blues along the way.
Her debut 12-track release The Great Mixtape flows through a collection of experimental beats and left-field rhymes shaped by Sampa’s wide-spanning influences of Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill and Yasiin Bey. ‘Blue Boss', released on Soundcloud hit #1 on Hype Machine and got picked by on BBC Radio 1, reaching 1 million Spotify plays in two months.
Sampa has won over a wave of adoring fans with her live shows, having shared stages with artistes such as Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat, Hiatus Kaiyote, Ibeyi and Little Simz, while also appearing at festivals like Sugar Mountain, Laneway and WOMAD.
