Despite her age, the Zimbabwean-born rapper, singer, songwriter, and designer have already been in the music business for the best part of a decade. She exploded onto the scene in 2014 as a teenager fresh out of Adelaide and discovered there was a world ready and waiting to hear the versatility of her voice.
Her first releases instantly won a loyal following and secured a record deal, and she hasn’t looked back since. Early hit singles such as M.O.B. (achieving Gold Record status in 2017) and Simulation were followed by critically acclaimed debut album TKAY, an ARIA nomination and a string of collaborators including Martin Solveig, Killer Mike, Troye Sivan, and JPEGMAFIA.
Tkay has proven to be an explosive talent not only in Australia but across the globe, winning an MTV European Music Award in 2018, being nominated as a Viewer’s Choice Best New International Act at the 2016 BET Awards, as well as performing at Governor’s Ball in New York and being part of an international advertising campaign for Mumm Champagne alongside the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt.
On her latest EP, Last Year Was Weird (also the name of her own recently-launched fashion label) Tkay reflects on growing up, finding herself and finding a level of confidence and courage that she believes she needs to take her to the next level. Flexin’, the first single from the EP was a hard-hitting comeback statement, with Tkay showing off her eclectic flow with a feature verse from guest artist, Duckwrth. The two artists combine to produce one of the most electric songs of 2018.
She has since been hard at work between Los Angeles and Melbourne working towards her follow-up record, with her single Awake, featuring hip hop star JPEGMAFIA, ravaging the scene after becoming a crowd favourite across the festival circuit this summer.
